Dr. Sydney Young, M.D., PLPC

Meet Sydney

Dr. Young’s therapeutic focus and specialization is in Pain Reprocessing Therapy. She works with clients who have chronic pain as well as those interested in a mind-body approach to therapy. She strives to provide a safe and supportive environment in which her clients gain the education and skills necessary to promote their own healing and well-being, ultimately working to put herself out of a job.

A foundational aspect of Dr. Young’s approach with clients is a sound understanding of neurophysiology, knowing that science and medicine have not identified a division between mind and body. The mind-body connection is a two-way street, and understanding this is imperative to providing clients with the tools they need to leverage the nervous system’s innate ability to heal from physical and emotional stress/trauma. This is a key component of Dr. Young’s work with clients who have chronic pain. Rooted in neuroscience, Pain Reprocessing Therapy is an evidence-based modality that aims to rewire neural pathways in the brain in order to deactivate pain.

Dr. Young's educational background includes graduating summa cum laude from Truman State University where she studied Psychology and Kinesiology and then earning her M.D. from the University of Missouri. Ultimately, the traditional medical approach did not align with Dr. Young’s core values. She also desired a closer therapeutic relationship with her clients than was possible within the medical standard of 15 minutes every few months. Her fascination with the mind-body connection and how to harness that connection for greater health and well-being eventually led her to pursue a Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. In addition to her formal education, Dr. Young’s past experience as a professional contemporary ballet dancer in NYC as well as her work as a personal trainer has shown her time and again how the health of the mind and body cannot be separated.

Dr. Young works under the supervision of Chris Lawrence, Ph.D., SEP, whose own work as a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner strongly aligns with Dr. Young’s therapeutic interests
